To/from Nong Khai by air

The nearest big airport in Thailand is at Udon Thani, about 56km away. Vientiane in Laos, although closer, is much more expensive to fly to. Consequently many people use Udon and Nong Khai to get to the PDR.

You can get from Udon airport to Nong Khai by bus, minibus, or taxi. See the road page for details.

(The following details last updated December 29 2007)

AIR ASIA

The equivalent of EasyJet in Europe. Cheap, no-thrills, often delayed a little but otherwise safe.

AirAsia: Bangkok Suvarnabhumi to Udon Thani

Daily flights at 16.15. Takes about an hour but be prepared for delays.

Prices from 399 baht plus extras of about 600 baht (400 of which is a "temporary fuel surchage"), but go up the closer you get to the departure.

AirAsia: Udon Thani to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi

Daily flights at 17.40.

Prices again from 399 baht plus extras of about 600 baht (400 of which is a "temporary fuel surchage"), but go up the closer you get to the departure.

NOK AIR

Similar to AirAsia - the equivalent of RyanAir in Europe. But more flight options than AirAsia.

Link: Nok Air (English)

Nok Air: Bangkok Don Muang to Udon Thani

Daily flights at 07.00, 13.20, and 17.40. Takes about an hour but expect to be delayed.

A huge range of prices averaging at 400 baht plus extras. If you book well in advance you'll get a single from 175 baht. Extras are about 600 baht at the moment, with the 400 baht fuel surchage. Closer to the departure date you'll pay more.

Nok Air: Udon Thani to Bangkok Don Muang

Daily flights at 08.30, 14.50, 19.10 and 22.15. I have no idea how there gets to be more flights in one direction than the other.

As above, huge range of prices.

THAI AIRWAYS

You can fly to and from Don Muang to Udon by Thai Air, but you'll pay far more than Nok Air or AirAsia. Prices start about 1,450 baht.

TRANSFERS BETWEEN DON MUANG AND SUVARNABHUMI AIRPORTS

You may arrange your trip so that you arrive at Suvarnabhumi and then take another flight from Don Muang, or vice versa, a few hours later. Don’t waste hundreds of baht on a taxi between the two airports: get the yellow 555 or 556 bus from outside either airport: it’s only 34 baht. It takes about an hour and a quarter.
